Installing
exterior shutters
By installing exterior
shutters, you can add a nice decorative touch to your home's exterior
and even to the interior. In addition to adding to the decor of your
home, the shutters are also beneficial in that they are energy
efficient, which may add to the value of your home. Many people do not
know whether they want to add color or texture in a room after their
shutters are installed. They often feel a finishing touch is needed
especially if a neutral color is present throughout the room.
If you install louvers, there are several window coverings you could use
above your patio sliding doors. You may want to go with a pinch-pleated
valance, swag valance or cornice valance. However, there also other
things you need to consider.
You should consider the following: the size of the louvers; the amount
of space from the top of the door to the ceiling; the depth; and the
type of fabric. For example, if you have chosen a 3-1/2-inch louver,
your fabric and window treatment style must be able to handle the scale
of the louvers, which, in this example, is quite large. As for the
amount of space from the top of the door to the ceiling, if there is
approximately one foot or more of space above the top of the door to the
ceiling, the valance treatment should begin at the ceiling. Allow for
the depth when considering the overall appearance of your window
treatments, as well as the scale of the window and shutters. The depth
of the window treatment should not be too short.
The fabric for the valance treatment is also an important choice. You
would not want a fabric too thin, such as one you could see through.
Instead it should be of medium-weight. The actual window treatment
should be about three-times fullness. The decor of your room should
determine the scale of the fabric design.
When it is time to install your valance treatment, allow for the returns
to be long enough for the valance to protrude out from the wall far
enough so that there will be ample clearance along the top of the
shutter frame. This will prevent interference when the shutter is opened
or closed. Consult a professional drapery service to give you further
suggestions, and
to provide you with a final measurement to ensure that your treatment is
installed properly. The additional cost of this final measurement is
well worth it, in order to confirm the final measurement, rather than
trying to do this yourself. A drapery service or workroom can also
provide you with design expertise. Remember that the valance treatment
will provide the finishing touch to your shutters.
