Window shutter knowledge

Window shutters were originally made to protect windows and the inside of a building in extreme weather.  In many ways, they are just like doors to a window.  Over time however, window shutters became used more as decor for the outside of the house.  They became a source of outside window treatments.  Window shutters are now used more to add style to a house instead of protection from the weather and other outside elements.  In many homes and neighborhoods, the shutters seen from the home serve more as a decorative element and has no function in protecting the window itself.  It's use is purely for appearance reasons of the home.

Many window shutters are made with a sturdy material, usually wood or vinyl.  People nowadays commonly prefer vinyl because it's easier to maintain.  Exterior window shutters that were made for functional use were usually louvered, in which its horizontal slatted design allowed for light and air while keeping out rain.  Although many shutters are used for decoration now, the Louvered style shutters are still a popular feature in decorative shutters.
